It was definitely a smart move for my beloved Milwaukee Bucks to trade Dirk Nowitzki for Robert "Tractor" Traylor. Frickin' genius!
The Missouri House today debated legislation regarding tractor parades.
That's right. Tractor parades!
Rep. Mike Thomson's bill would carve an exemption in state law to allow tractors parades for fundraising purposes. It was a "consent" bill, legislation that usually passes without opposition.
Once the bill was passed, Rep. Jake Zimmerman, D-Olivette, made a statement about the bill's emergency clause. The memorizing speech was captured by MDN reporter Rebecca Beitsch. The audio file can be heard near the bottom of her biography page.
"If tractor parades remained outlawed, only outlaws will hold tractor parades," Zimmerman said. "Every day, every day in the 83rd District people are clamoring to hold tractor parades. But they are prevented by our cruel and unjust statutes."
I was just in and around Zimmerman's district less than a day ago. I can assure the Missouri blogosphere that cities such as Clayton, Creve Coeur and Olivette are tractor fanatics.
Zimmerman, who noted he is part of the growing "Jewish caucus" in the General Assembly, also mentioned Jews have used tractors to make pilgrimages for an upcoming religious holiday.
"To imagine, Mr. Speaker, the horror of not being able to come to synagogue on the tractors... Mr. Speaker, as you can see words fail me," Zimmerman said.
